June 16

Hundreds of thousands pay tribute at the funeral of Imre Nagy and his companions on Heroes’ Square. The funeral begins at 9:00 AM, and for two hours the long line of mourners winds its way before the coffins. Laszló Mensáros and Iván Darvas read aloud a list of the names of those who were executed for their participation in the Revolution. Wreath laying begins at 11:00. At noon Árpád Göncz opens the ceremony and asks the people of Hungary to observe 5 minutes of silence. Speeches are made by Miklós Vásárhelyi, Sándor Rácz, Imre Mécs, Tibor Zimányi, Béla Király and Viktor Orbán. At around 1:30 PM the funeral procession makes its way to the New Public Cemetery. At the cemetery family members, comrades, and friends lay their wreaths as the names of the executed are recited once again. The coffins of Pál Maléter, Géza Losonczy, József Szilágyi, and Miklós Gimes, as well a symbolic sixth coffin to the Unknown Revolutionary, are lowered into their graves. In the evening the Committee for Historical Justice holds a reception for Hungarian émigrés, many of who have only been permitted to return to Hungary, for the first time since they left, for this occasion.
