October 23

1988

Thirty-second anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Two days earlier Budapest Police Headquarters puts a ban on all events planned for October 23. The organizers, however, decide to carry out the events as planned. On the evening of October 22 the Hungarian Democratic Forum decides to back out and on Hungarian television appeals to members to stay away from all commemorations. The Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Friendship Society, the Alliance of Young Democrats, the Free Initiative Network and the Committee for Historical Justice are also pressured into refraining from organizing peaceful commemorations. Despite massive police presence several small groups assemble at various points of the city. They are dispersed by police at each location. In the evening the Committee for Historical Justice presents a documentary program of the Revolution of 1956 at the Jurta Theater. Hundreds attend.
