1988

June 16

On the thirtieth anniversary of the execution of Imre Nagy and four companions, independent groups hold a commemoration in Plot 301 of New Public Cemetery. Hundreds attend. Sándor Rácz, leader of the Budapest Workers’ Council during the Revolution of 1956, and Jenő Fónay speak, and the poet Gáspár Nagy reads his poem about Imre Nagy. Imre Mécs and László Hegedűs read the names of 244 people executed for their participation in the revolution, whom they know are resting in Plot 301. The police do not intervene. Later on in the day the group is prevented from approaching Heroes’ Square and they move on to the square of the Batthyány-Imre Nagy eternal flame. Here they are met by police who prevent members from holding their speeches. Using gas spray and truncheons they disperse the crowd and make several arrests. The demonstrators move on to the television building where they are able to listen to János Kis’s and Imre Mécs’s speeches before they are dispersed, this time by riot police. Chanting Imre Nagy’s name they move to Vörösmarty Square where the police disperse them for the last time.
